hi everyone- the last time I posted was back in May, when I had my sleep study done.
It was supposed to be a two part test, but because the tech got started late I had to go back to have the second part (w/ CPAP) done separately. But long story short, yesterday I got my CPAP.
It's the REMaster and I chose the "nasal pillow" that has the head strap (instead of using a full face mask).
A couple of comments my first morning after:
- The machine is a little louder than I'd like. I prefer complete silence in a pitch-black room for sleeping. I may use my earplugs.
- The blue "on" light is really bright! Again, I like it dark, so in the middle of the night I put something on top to block the light.
The nasal pillows aren't bad...I may try the small size tonight, as at one point, probably early this morning, I woke up and my nose felt a bit pinched.
However, my partner said that I didn't snore once, which is great. And while I don't feel like a completely new person (yet?) I will say that I do feel rested. I know it'll take a few days to get used to, but I'm really glad I got it.
My pressure is set to 90? 9? Not sure what the scale is (the dr. did a very POOR job and basically prescribed it without going into much detail, but that's a whole other posting). And this model also has the heater and water chamber.

Re: First Night with CPAP~
Sat, July 28, 2007 - 10:06 PMCongrats Ron on a fairly painless first night!
There are also forums that have lots of info if you have any real problems that you can tap into on the net. Sounds like you are off to a very good start. I had a good first night too when I got mine. I remember the sense of relief I had thinking that finally I could sleep without that wakefulness I had before.
Keep us posted!

Re: First Night with CPAP~
Mon, July 30, 2007 - 1:44 PMHey Ron...
Glad to hear things went relatively well on the first go.
My machine is a loud too...once, when I was with friends on a trip, I made a "housing" out of a larger styrofoam cooler. I made sure there was really good airflo (a large openeing pointed away from us) and what it did was help dampen the noise a bit. It was totally unplanned and looked pretty amateur but it helped. Key thing was airflo - don't want to put strain on the compressor in the machine as it will do whatever it need to try and meet the pressure setting it has.
Also, I have made a tent around my machine with pillows and a blanket - the pillows to create enough space around the machine to have good airflow and the blanket to dampen the noise. I just made sure there was a large opening pointed away from any direct line to others earshot.
Don't know if that will spark any ideas. Just keep in mind "airflow" - that is key.
Nevertheless, kudos and its a nice thing to hear the person sleeping beside you didn't hear you snore. Woo hoo!

Re: First Night with CPAP~
Tue, July 31, 2007 - 7:50 AMThanks-
I've had it on the nightstand, but I think I'm going to move it to the floor next to the bed (our bed is low to the floor) to see if that cuts some of the noise.
I also adjusted the headstrap so it wasn't so tight, which helped. However, the past two nights I've woken up early, and have taken the headgear off completely- I think it's a reaction to the noise and just wanting to roll over and nuzzle my face into the pillow :-)

I did that for two years. I would wake up with my mask thrown off and sometimes even the machine was turned off (but had no memory of doing so). I did, however, eventually comply.
