I have had my 3rd of 6 visits before I have my operation. They have restricted me to 2000 calories and I am required to keep a detailed food and medical journal (blood sugar, BP/pulse, hours slept). 2000 calories did not seem a lot at first…I can stuff it away, but most of the time, I don’t think about eating. I have found it difficult to eat the full 2000 calories everyday. Sometime, I just don’t get around eating either breakfast or lunch and I don’t snack. Yet, I am still over 150 lbs over weight.
On the strange and happier side of things, I had my metabolic rate tested and the results were that I burn 3000 calories at rest. Now, my wife and I were the only ones that thought that seemed awful high. A professional athlete burns between 5000-6000 calories. So, if I do nothing and I consume less then 3000 calories, I should lose weight.
Since last month and on most days, I had roughly 2000 calories, but I only lost 5 lbs. The Registered Dietician did not think that was unusual or she thought I lied in my journal. So, when I go back up this month, I am going to ask to be retested.
It just unlikely that it would be that high when I have been so inactive for the past 3 years. I have been struggling all my life with my weight. Even when I was my most active, it was hard for me to lose or keep the weight.

Re: Mayo Update
Fri, June 6, 2008 - 12:35 PMLee, are you going to have gastric bypass or the lap band? The lap band is a consideration for me because the other is too drastic and is irreversable. My boss had the gastric bypass and has been having to have transfusions every week b/c she can't absorb the iron she needs. I'm not trying to talk you out of it if that's what you are having - I well realize that one only takes those steps when things are drastic.
I wish you the best and a quick return to good health. Keep us posted!

Re: Mayo Update
Fri, June 6, 2008 - 6:43 PMErica, that's GREAT news. My boss had her surgery about 4 -5 years ago and this has only just become a problem now. It may be due to a variety of things...she's 54.

Re: Mayo Update
Fri, June 6, 2008 - 10:01 PMI am having the gastric bypass over the lap band because 11 years ago I had hiatal hernia surgery and the lap band will not work on me. We all have a point of no return. For the past three years my life has been in limbo and I want it back. For example, the past three days were very good considering everything. I got a lot of stuff done around my house that I have been putting off. I was feeling really good. I am was still very tired, but feeling very happy about what I had accomplished.
ANYway, today is another story. My blood pressure dropped to 100/58 and I had a massive headache from hell. I could not keep my eyese open and all I wanted to do was sleep. This has been normal for me and the doctors cannot explain it, but they feel it is part of my sleep apnea.
The Mayo Clinic believes this will be part of, if not, the solution to return my life to something more like normal. I am willing to give it a shot. -

Re: Mayo Update
Fri, July 4, 2008 - 7:43 AMThanks for asking...Cigna (one of the most evil companies out there) requires that you be seen by a Bariatrics Specialist and a Registered Nutritionist once a month for six months before they will approve the surgery. July will be my 5th visit. So, sometime in August we should be scheduling the surgery. Note: you miss just one of those visits; you have to start the whole 6th months over again.
I have lost about 10 lbs since I have started the process, but my sleep apnea is getting worse. It’s getting harder to stay awake throughout the day. Fortunately, I also see their sleep specialist in July and my wife and I have prepared a list of questions for him.
As for Cigna, well they be bastards and a whole assortment of other words I won’t post here. They yet again they denied my claim for renewing long term disability and it only took them almost a full year from my termination date. So, it looks like we will be going to court. Every one of my doctors, including those at the Mayo Clinic, have provided a written statement that I am incapable of returning to work.
Last week, my wife and I watched a story on Good Morning America about just this very thing. It was about a whole list of people that Cigna has denied their benefit; including a woman with stage 4 breast cancer. They said she should be able to return to work. She died three months later. Cigna is the scum of the earth: putting profit before human decency. I really want to know what is happening to this country where we allow this sort of thing to continue.
ANYway, I am going to stop now, my blood pressure is starting to boiling and I want to have a good day .
Happy 4th everyone!!!!!!! -
