Difficulties Falling Asleep

topic posted Fri, July 4, 2008 - 9:58 AM by  Leah
I've been having problems falling asleep for the last month or so. Once I'm asleep I'm fine and sleep the rest of the night but it is taking me almost 2 hours to actually fall asleep. Is anyone else experiencing this? It's frustrating!

Frequently. Sometimes I can tell myself I'm just resting and will be aware of being awake for a long time. Sometimes I'll get up and read or sit and watch the night sky, which is beautiful here when there isn't a cloud cover.

When I feel I really need to sleep, I'll take Sonata. It's called a sleep inducer. It seems that if you stay asleep OK, this might work for you. I tried Ambien and it gave me a hangover, no matter what the advertising says. Some doctors prescribe Trazadone, which happens to be a tri-cyclic anti-depressant.

An ENT doctor that I saw back in January said it was rather common for people to have trouble actually falling asleep once they've gotten used to their CPAP machines. I've only really noticed it the last month or so but thinking back, it's been a while since I've had trouble actually falling asleep.

Since I already take an anti-depressant, Cymbalta, I'm not a candidate for an additional one. I'm thinking I may call my sleep specialist this week and see if he can shed any light on this for me.

On the plus side -- I do get a full 8-9 hours sleep with my CPAP every night; after I eventually fall asleep, that is.

I have my good and bad nights; but also, I have two herniated discs in my lower back and neuropathy in my feet. If both or either are acting up, I can forget about sleeping.

One thing that has worked for me, when this happens is, to get out of bed and go into my living room and read for an hour or so. Then I try again. That works most of the time.

Oh, one other thing that I have noticed and last night sleep reminded me of this. I keep waking up 8 - 10 times thoughout the night and it happens most nights and I don't know why. When I was wearing the full face mask, it would wake me up from the noise that it made, but I don't even notice the nasel pillow. Another question for the sleep doc.

***Just sharing from my own personal experiences and not suggesting my route is the correct one for everyone or that what I experience is the same as anyone else...***

Yes. I have trouble falling asleep. In fact, that trouble is at the core of my compliance problems. Since lying there with the contraption strapped to my face when I am not sleepy only makes me agitated, learned behavior and conditioning find me waiting until I actually get the sleepies before I even go to my bedroom - meaning, I have to have already nodded off for a second (or longer). Unfortunately, what often happens to me - at least once a week at best and sometimes for several nights in a row for me - I fall asleep in my studio while waiting for sleep to come because, for some reason, when it hits it is like getting clubbed.

I see twofold, contributing problems here...One is the lack of getting sleepy at a reasonable hour. The other, is trying to time my regimen so that I can gracefully transition from wake to sleep ritual.

For the first problem - getting sleepy when I want...After I did months of research, i settled on trying out medical cannabis and it has really helped. I have tried "brain chemistry" drugs and I do not fare well. Even the old school amyltriptayline - even at 25% dosage - made me feel so odd and out of it that I would rather not sleep. I did not even want to deal with stuff like Lunesta/Ambien because I am fairly sure I will be one of those who has more pronounced side effects. However, I do know it really works well with others so I am knocking it. Medical cannabis works for me because after about 1-1.5 hours or taking a dose, I get quite sleepy which actually can make my second problem of getting to bed gracefully harder sometimes. But, i have no hangover, no bad side effects. And, because the effects are pleasurable and relaxing, I tolerate my mask much more. In fact, that is the benefit I most appreciate - I am claustrophobic and that mask used to really piss me off. I even busted on hucking it across the bedroom.

I also tried Rozerem because it is much different than Lunesta/Ambien. It actually worked very well but again, I felt like I was in a haze for most of the next day so I dropped that. Rozerem does work differently as all it does it act as a melatonin agonist (pro-melatonin) to helpe the sleepies come on but beyond that, it does not neccesarily help people stay asleep like Lunesta/Ambien.

As far as staying asleep for me...The cannabis really helps - added about 2 hours to my sleep. But, I am happy if I get 5 hours in the end. :(

So, for me, in order of preference:
    - Medical Cannabis
    - Rozerem
    - The rest...

If you just problems getting to sleep, Rozerem might be something to consider. If it doesn't make you foggy the next day, it might be a great one.

    Good luck!

Leah, it might be your time of life - ahem - because I am experiencing a similar problem. Historically, my problems with sleep did not involve difficulties falling asleep, rather STAYING asleep past 2 or 3 in the morning. Now, I do have problems falling asleep. What works for me is to listen to my iPod. I usually have a book or podcast that I am listening to, and eventually, I'll fall asleep. I think I have written about this before when my husband has commented on just how "lovely" I look with my mask, my iPod and whatever else is going on. Right now, I have a small blonde streak in my hair in the front, and he's made comments about Lily Munster and the Bride of Frankenstein (if I'm the Bride, who does that make him???!!).

Yeah, I'm convinced it's pure love because Stanley doesn't seem to mind the machine and the mask and the hose that's been my permanent sleeping partner since June 2006...and the dog; let's not forget the dog. Thank goodness we have a king size bed!

I had my fifth visit with the Mayo Clinic this past Monday. I also saw their sleep specialist. I explained to him that I was having troubles going to bed at a reasonable hour: that I felt like I was turning into more of a night owl then normal.

One of his recommendations was to start taking 3mg of Melatonin at 6:30 pm. This should start making me feel ready for bed around 11 pm. Then the hardest part of me, was to get up at 7:30 am no matter how late I went to bed. All this I had heard before, but he also said that I need to spend 45 mins outside in sunlight.

Apparently, being out in the sunlight is supposed to help reset the internal clock. Once the body has adjusted to waking up at 7:30 am, it should be ready for bed at a more reasonable hour.

I don’t know if this will work, but I have started it and will keep you all updated.
