Do any of you experience vertigo more than on rare occasions that you think might be related either to your apnea itself or stemming from apnea therapy?
Since my apnea was at its worst and I started complying more regularly with my BiPap regimen, I have experienced vertigo several times a year lasting as short as one day and as long as a 1-2 weeks.
Still trying to put my finger on it but it seems like the following could be factors:
- I sleep late in general (early am). Whenever I try to drastically change my sleep patterns (to sleep earlier) I tend to experience a bit of it.
- On some occasions, I feel like I have a bit of a head cold immediately preceding a vertigo spell
- I think I may have very mild, ongoing vertigo and it explodes now and then
I have also heard that many patients who use BiPap/CPap actually have a low grade sinus infection and do not know it because it is not obviously symptomatic. The explanation is that drier, forced air tends to dry out our sinuses and make them more susceptible to sinus infections. The sinus infections can affect the inner ear causing vertigo.
Anyway...vertigo is one of those things that can be hard to trace causes for unless an infection is readily apparent and can happen for reasons other than viral or bacterial. Oh well.
Anyone else experience anything like this?

Re: Vertigo Anyone?
Fri, August 10, 2007 - 2:17 PMI also suffer from vertigo; but my first incident took place while undergoing cancer treatments in 1997. Apparently my body reacted to the radiation treatments by giving me vertigo. It was short-lived, thankfully. However since then I do suffer from it several times a year. I have found that I am especially troubled with it when my allergies seem to flair; when a storm rolls in or the weather system changes; and especially when I am experiencing symptoms of a head cold or upper respiratory ailment. Now I have found that if I don't get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep (using my CPAP) I will experience some degree of vertigo when exceptionally tired.
It appears that my vertigo is not related directly to any viral or bacterial infection but is simply something that has happened to me over the last 10 years. When I do notice symptoms, taking my allergy medications helps lessen the affects. IMHO as I am not a doctor, there is an OTC dramamine 50 mg. that you can take which is touted for motion sickness, another way to describe vertigo, BUT that dose may make you very drowsy and unable to function during waking hours. A generic low-dose called meclizine (sp?) at 25 mg. is a better alternative to try first. When my vertigo seems to be acting up, I'll take one 25mg. meclizine at bedtime since one pill lasts approx. 24 hours. That way, if I were to experience drowsiness it wouldn't matter. I'd be sleeping anyway. That has worked well for me and now I keep this drug added to my list of helpful meds. You might considering asking your pharmacist about it.

Re: Vertigo Anyone?
Fri, August 10, 2007 - 6:09 PMI had my first real bout with vertigo about 1 1/2 years ago..well before starting my use of my CPAP. I awoke with the room spinning so badly that I started vomiting from it. I ran to my bathroom falling down the whole way because I couldn't tell which way was up. My eyes started dancing (nystagmus) and jumping from side to side. My toilet is between two walls and my head kept hitting those walls as I tried to aim to throw up into the toilet. That real vertigo lasted about 10 days. Doc said it was 'the rocks in my ears' that were stuck out of postion. Sort of like a water level that couldn't find it's level mark so it didn't know which way was up.
Luckily that was the one and only time I had real vertigo. I have since had dizzy spells that have lasted a few minutes or an hour or so. Thankfully nothing like that first spell. I do notice feeling dizzy at night when the lights are off..but I write that off to old age in my case..something I am sure you don't have to deal with :)
Maybe we should all have a slumber party. That way if we get dizzy we can just all bump into each other ...we do seem to like each other well enough :)
Let me know if you sort it out.. I never get to play around with my schedule enough to see if changes help it at all. I would be interested to see if changes help yours.
Good luck!
Pam

Re: Vertigo Anyone?
Fri, August 10, 2007 - 8:43 PMI had vertigo once as a result of an infection but it eventually cleared up with antibiotics. However, it took a few days.
Boot, I've read that there are exercises that you can do to reset the "rocks". Try googling "vertigo exercises" or "exercises for vertigo". -

Re: Vertigo Anyone?
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 4:26 AMHi Frances,
Good to hear from you again. Yes, I tried those when I was in the midst of my vertigo. At first it just made me feel worse but the doctor and the websites assured me that eventually if you stick with it that it really works. I am not sure if the exercises were what helped or it if just cleared because it just lasts 10-14 days anyway (sort of like taking chicken soup for a cold). I do know it can't hurt and I would do anything to make it better when it was bad and it sure made sense to me that those rocks could be reset if they could be out of whack.
The idea being that the rocks would be set back into their normal postion by rolling your head in a certain way thereby resetting the water level in your inner ear.
I am glad you reminded me of that. How are you doing these days anyway? Fill us in on things with you?
Hugs to all from Pam

Re: Vertigo Anyone?
Wed, August 15, 2007 - 7:40 AMI'm always dizzy, but it has nothing to do with vertigo.
I think you might be right, mc, about low-level sinus infections and the like. Plus we have a California pepper tree that every year I swear I am going to cut down (prolly older than I am - which would make it an antique!) because in August it "blooms" and covers everything in yellow pollen and makes my husband and me miserable for the month. This year, however, I might actually do it (cut it down). I am not going to cut it down because it is a nuisance (though it is), but rather because its roots are causing some property damage to our neighbor, etc. I'd deal with it if it was must a mess and health problem because that doesn't really hurt anyone.
Ok, I'm gonna stop bitching now because if I open that door any farther, all my stuff (and Ma Kettle's) is gonna come falling out!
Now I kind wish I did have vertigo. At least I'd have something in common with Kim Novak. -

Are you familiar with the term "Fibber McGee's Closet" cuz that's the image that came to mind when I read "Ok, I'm gonna stop bitching now because if I open that door any farther, all my stuff (and Ma Kettle's) is gonna come falling out!"
Great visual!!

Re: Vertigo Anyone?
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 10:55 AMHmm, I haven’t had any vertigo issues, but when I wake up in the morning it takes my a few moments to ordinate myself; which, might be slight vertigo.
The sinus issue I had before the sleep apnea. When I was a kid, my ENT doc had me flush my sinuses out with salt water (saline solution). I used to snort the solution from a glass, and spit it out. When I got married, my wife’s mother introduced me to a nettle pot that lets you pour the solution in one nostril and out the other. A lot easier, and I know it sound gross, but it washes all that stuff out of there and keeps the sinuses moist. It made a big difference with my sinus infections and allergies.
I try to do it once a day; before I go to bed. And, if I feel a head cold coming on, I will do it 2-3 times a day. -

Re: Vertigo Anyone?
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 6:07 PMThanks for that Lee - Lately, I have been using pure saline sprays myself and they do help noticeably when I need them.
What is a nettle pot? Sounds very effective and I am interested.

Re: Vertigo Anyone?
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 7:09 AMIt kind of looks like a small tea pot. You tilt your head to one side and put the spout into the upper nostal. the water fills the sinuses and pours out the othe nostal. Then you tilt your head to the other side and repeat. You need to use warm water and the right mixture of salt. I need more salt then my wife.
It is a very effective way of cleaning your sinuses and getting rid of head colds. -

Re: Vertigo Anyone?
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 9:44 AMPeople I know who do this swear by it. I cannot yet wrap my head around it (no pun intended). My old boss, a nurse, used a commercial preparation that she and another coworker swore by. If I can, I'll get the name of the stuff they used - I think it is very inexpensive. I just called it "Nose Juice" (much to the consternation of my fairly prissy ex-boss).
Lee, I gag very easily - does this happen with a nettle pot? -
-
Re: Vertigo Anyone?
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 7:18 PMNo, but it took a couple of tries before Leah, my wife, was comfortable with it. It is a little more difficult my old way (snorting the water from a glass). Leah would not do that, so she used saline spray. The problem with that is, it does not flush your sinuses out, but it does moisturize them.
