Hey Heron - way to keep at it!

Not presuming any of this so these suggestins are in an attempt to provide "blanket coverage":

If you do not already have a humidifier, I suggest trying one out. And, if it is a passive/passover type then I would consider trying out one that is actually heating and humidifying "actively".

Also, if you think you might be mouth breathing - and that is normal and not due to congestion - I would see if someone could help you verify this happens. If so, there are chin straps that help keep your mouth closed. But my being a mouth breather is why I use the "full-face" type masks.

Another things that could be a factor is if the air in your room is cold. Not sure how many get affected by this but cold air messes me up - it clogs me up and makes it harder for me to breath even when I do not have a cold and this is more pronounced with my BiPap going. So, I keep a room heater near enough for the intake air to be warmed a bit.

This last one is not meant to sound consdescending at all and is something I struggled with. On top fo the physical demands of getting used to sleeping with the getup, there was the whole psychological factor. I am mildly claustrophobic and I hate the feeling of being boxed in or not being able to mover or feel the way I normally do. It can trigger "semi-violent" responses (I had "ripped" the mask off my face on numerous, numerous occasions). The only experiential advice I can give is 1)just keep pushing on - it will get better and 2)whatever ritual or herbal (non-narcotic) remedy you have that helps calm you down might be real helpful before bed (I try not to post this too much because of the sometimes controversial nature of its use but I use cannabis to calm me and stabilize my sleep patterns).

I am really encouraged that you keep chipping away at the process. More power to you, Heron. It took me YEARS to comply. But it did make a huge difference in the end. It did involve, however, me getting used to something I thought I could never learn to be comfortable with.

I think that is part of the problem

      not comfortable with it..

I have so much pain in my body..from the fibro..that I need to adjust my body...alot at night..

I seem to be ok within the space of the mask..it does feel kinda boxed in though..

when you are asleep you cannot control the mouth situation..

hope with a lil practice I can do

for me as far as a bit of the green..OH MAN I MISS IT SO MUCH..have been looking into buying a vaporisor

heard they were good..and I could use some lung herbs in it too...mullen..

I hope I can get use to this thing..will try again tonight..

my room is cold..but I prefer it that way..sleep all winter with window open a bit

and...I do have a heated version of the CPAP..that is why I thought maybe I was having my mouth open...it is awfulwhen you open your mouth with that respirator on..it chocks ya.. frig!

I do take trazadone..for sleeping..and to help with the fibro...the green wires me..well at first..anyhow..than the doze comes in..hehehe

hope you are doing well..Mc..thanx for the thoughts..too..add to my bank of knowledge..of dancing ..with my new dragon!

FYI, I am interviewing tommorrow (Wed) at the Nation Fibromyalgia Association for a design position. I am not very familiar with Fibromyalgia and i was first drawn by the fact the position was in the non-profit sector. I have since read up and I am really hoping now I get the position.

I forgot you had menioned you had it. More power to you, girl!

        Check your messages too.

        Peace.

          that is really cool

make sure you let us know..how you dooooooooooooooooooo..fingers crossed..!

Fibro is a horrible..syndrome..and it goes along with ....chronic fatique...also..and I happen to be lucky enough to have both
and they are autoimmune..as is asthma~

it took me 5 years to find out what I have..and have been diagnosed for around 12 years..and I have been finding that
this year my health has actually been the poorest of record..including...both trageminal neuralga and occipital neuralgia..

with the fibro..its the every freakin thing hurts syndrome..if it ain't one thing its another.. I feel like...the princess and the pea

anything that puts pressure on my body makes me hurt..sitting on chairs..I have a bad case of sore butt..and even the bridge of my nose where my glasses sit..gets painful too.. and lying in bed..even with foam and an air mattress..still sore body!

and it comes along..and they think can even be stimulated by bad sleeping..

take care of that sleeping MC..its most important

that is why..I hope I can get sorted out with this mask..situation..as I think if I can sleep better I will feel better..at least that is what everyone has been telling me...

guess what..think I have solved the chocking issue ..and its not good

think my room is too cold for the machine..to get the air to my nose

it is cooling down in the hose...

I tried wrapping the hose..last night..and putting a heating pad over part of the hose..

    still not good...

going to have to try to rig up something else tonight..

may not be able to use this machine ..up in my room..till springtime...

I do not have heat in my room...I could use a plug in heater..but frig that will blow my electric bill out the roof..cannot really afford that..

damn....just have to wear it..for a while and when I start chocking from my throat and mouth glued together take it off..for a while..

any suggestions..any of you have this problem?

      Hey Heron...
The cold messes me up too. So, I got an inexpensive ceramic area heater (like a small fan) that has a thermostat (so it turns on and off instead of running all night). After trying it out, I found a setting that keeps the room barely comfortable. Then, although several feet away, I pointed it toward the intake side of my BiPap so warm air is immediately in the system although the room is still a bit cold. I don't mind being a bit cold becaues I can wrap up but breathing cold air clogs me up. Then, in the meantime, I fall asleep, the room warms to a better ambient temperature with a conservative heat setting and then the thing runs just enough to keep the room a bit warmer throughout the night.

This works because the BiPap system is sending warm air immediately although the room is not warmed up. It only needs to have warm air close to the intake.

It does raise the electric bill a bit but the thermostat feature helps. Actually, it is just an adjustment knob (no digital display).

Just another approach. It will cost a bit in bills but I am thinking it is more efficient than central heating or trying the heat the whole room to breathable temperatures. Good luck.

Heron, do you have a heater on your Bi/CPAP? That might help you - I'm sorry if I have missed part of your trials...I know that I absolutely COULD NOT have a heated humidifier on my machine and was quite adamant that I NOT have heated air - for some reason it is the only thing that EVER makes me feel panicky or claustrophobic. It might be something fairly easily accomplished if you call you DME supplier.

MC, how did the interview go?

Oh yeah. I said I would report back. Sorry to Heron also.

I did not get the job. :( But they want to contract me occasionally for freelance work. Oh well. Not a total loss. :)

looking for work is so damn stressful...

I hope you are doing ok...

and also hope the right job happens for ya..SOON!

I Broke down and brought up a heated radiator electric heater..have you seen those..with the oil in them..they work pretty good..

but alas do heat the whole room..I got up in the middle of the night..and shut if of..

think it helped a lil..but some of this problem ..may also be my mouth I am thinking

with fibro.you tend t have a dry mouth..when I am awake..I can consciously make saliva..if my mouth is feeling dry..
but sleeping ...its on its own..

even with the warmer room...WHICH I HATE..I love a cool room..with warm blankets..I still woke up chocking with mouth glued together last night.. I took the mask off for a few hours..and than put it back on for the last few hours of sleep..

going to talk to the doc when I go..at the beginning of feb...about the mouth issue..

it may be a problem with a bit of both..mouth and room temp..

but last night ..I did the trial ..room temp improvement..and it still happened..

            UGHHHHHHHHHHh

I actually have gotten use to wearing the mask..that is not the part ...that is causing me my problem..it is the glued mouth and throat!

oh an ps..yes I have a heated machine..but the air was cooling down before it made its lil trip through the hose to my nose!

I wrapped the hose..to insulate it..but that didn't seem to help much..

                Drat, Heron!

I used to breathe through my mouth a lot when sleeping, but with my BiPAP I don't think I mouth breathe at all anymore, so I don't wake up with the desert mouth syndrome.

I highly suggest that you not go through this crap another month - call your doc next week and see if you can get in sooner or some adjustment can be made. Remember, he/she works for YOU. You've already made yourself into a pretzel trying to make this work - let's see what remedies he has...or call your tech that set you up with your machine. This is supposed to help you, not stress you more!!!

Sending you warm (aired) thoughts and energies,

                D.

P.S. Mike, it bites about the job, HOWEVER, I had an amazing thing happen this last week. I changed jobs last August (BIG mistake) and have been working for a guy who's been the president for 30 years and I have suspected is beginning to experience symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. That, along with a tendency to be VERY sharp and nasty on occasion has not made this a good fit for me. Well, last week, he gave me a letter to proofread that is announcing his retirement!!! This, along with many other new possibilities, makes staying where I am seem like it might be possible. So you never know what God has up the sleeve. I'm still shaking my head over the surprise of it. He's actually leaving to take another job (those folks aren't around him enough to know that there's an issue, and I suspect I might be the only one who suspects it now - having had someone I loved dearly develop Alzheimers - it might not be as apparent to others).

It was interesting - I had decided to wait until after the first of the year to start looking, and he tells me on December 28. I'm still gonna look, but wow.

I did experience something more akin to "desert throat" (My voice was CHANGING again at 34!) with my BiPAP once my first winter with it came around (I got it in June, and decided to forego the humidifier due to cost - conveniently forgetting that Upper Midwest winters can go toe to toe with most deserts for lack of humidity.). Needless to say, i called my doc to arrange for a humidifier as soon as I could at that point (Having some extra insurance payouts from a relative by that point helped to make things a bit more affordable.).

      hi there!

      I bought a snuggle hose from CPAP.com

It is a 'sock' that covers the hose- like a sock or pantyhose. It is made out of polarfleece. so you can definitely make it your self.....
      www.cpap.com/productpage...se-blue.html

The ends have a strip of velcro that fastens to itself -- to keep it from slipping down.

It really does keep me from waking up when touching a cold hose that is damp.

      Regards,
      Leo

thanx Lei for that ...it is just what I need...

        am still having trouble..

cannot make the night...my mouth dries up

but I am wondering if..it is my mouth..actually at this point..

I have fibro..and that comes with drymouth..which I seem to be able to deal with during the day..you can make saliva if you think about it..

but at night... lol.. am asleep..

going to the sleep apnea doc at the end of feb..will see what she has to say

the pulmonary guy was useless... I asked him if there was meds to create saliva..he said nope..just to dry up saliva

now with all the people dealing with dry mouth..wouldn't ya think..they could create something to help with this..

hey maybe it would make ya a drooling fool..who know.s

but I do have one question... you know the card that is in your machine..

my company asked me to take it out and send it to them

do any of you know..what kind of info is stored on that card?

        thanx..so much..
