Re: I made it through the surgery
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 9:23 PMHeron...and the rest of the Apnea tribe...
I am doing ok. Thanks!
Recovering from wounds is going pretty well. Still not 100% but much of fatigue from the actual surgery is now gone. I think my apnea has actually improved slightly because the removal of the tumor freed up my trachea a bit, I have lost some more weight, and there is less mass in my neck overall.
I am now preparing for RAI (radioactive iodine) treatment this Thurs. After thursday, I will be isolated for about 5 days so I can avoid radiating others. Currently, in preparation for RAI I am on a slew of meds that make me feel rather odd at times. So odd, I have refrained from using my gentle, trusted medical cannabis as I am sick of having an altered anything at the time. The drug I dislike the most right now - lithium. I am on it for just one week (to help with iodine uptake) and quite frankly, I will be happy when those are gone.
That lithium - its wacked.
Thanks, good people.

Re: I made it through the surgery
Wed, December 17, 2008 - 11:04 AMBut MC, you've ALWAYS had a glowing personality!!!
My brother starts his battle with prostate cancer this Friday - he has his biopsies, but the doc has already concluded he's positive for CA. He's already been through so much with the childhood polio...
Also, got word late last night that my father-in-law passed away. May I say, and I am sure that you will all agree, that 2008 cannot end fast enough. This has been close to the worst year of my life, bar none, and I know I'm not alone in that club. -

Re: I made it through the surgery
Wed, December 17, 2008 - 10:03 PMMC:
What I went through is a walk in the park compared to your surgery and my prayers are with you for a speedy recovery over your next hurdle. I understand your drug situation. I am about to partake in the trust cannabis, but I don’t know if my docs will prescribe it. I have been on several different nerve medications for the neuropathy in my feet. The pain keeps me up most nights and nothing has worked. Each new drug has a host of side effects that I would assume to avoid. Plus, I simply no longer trust in the FDA has our best interest in mind nor does the pharmaceutical industry. I just want to be able to sleep without the pain.
On a happier note, I am having a speedy recovery. I have been able to walk a couple miles each day now and with the exception of this tube sticking out of me, all my incisions have healed. Everything has been fast tracked as far as the food. I am now having very little pain from eating and most food agrees with me. By accident, I found out that I don't seem to be effected by "dumping syndrome" when I have sugar. My wife bought our daughter strawberry apple sauce. Thinking it was mine, I ate it with no ill effect. It was full of carbs and real sugar. I had no flushing of the face, no rapid heart rate or vomiting. Even still, I will avoid the sugars. My doctors are amazed at my recovery. So, I am totally grateful for those that prayed for me. It seems their prayers have work.
Darla, I am sorry to hear about your brother and the death of your father-in-law. I had a friend from work that survived prostate cancer and in his case they caught it late. He went through surgery and chemo and came though the other side. My prayers are with you and yours.
I agree that 2008 cannot end soon enough. However, 2009 looks like it will be a much better year.
Happy Christmas and may we all have a great 2009.
I am grateful that I found this tribe.

Re: I made it through the surgery
Mon, December 15, 2008 - 9:28 PMHey all, thank you for all of your support…I had a tiring weekend…a lot of my family and friends stopped by to check on me. It was nice, but it took a lot out of me. However, I never thought I would be where I am at after only a week after the surgery.
The Mayo is amazing facility and the personnel are par none: total professionalism. My operating room looked like something out of a sci-fi movie. They took great care of my wife and I. My room had a sofa bed for Leah to sleep on and the nurses would bring her food and drink during our stay. It was funny, after each shift change, another nurse would give Leah something that she thought we would need when we got home: bandages, tape, gauss, a pill crusher…etc. We had our own little medical kit when my stay was over.
The whole surgery took over 5 ½ hours, but most of that time was undoing a Nissen (stomach wrap) I had done back in 1996 to repair a hiatal hernia. Once they took it down, they created the two stomachs, then connected them to the small interested and the stomach pouch to my esophagus.
I was up and walking about 5 hours after the surgery. I don’t have any gnarly photos. I have only 5 small slits in my abdomen that were closed with a medical-grade crazy glue and those have already healed. However, I do have a tube protruding from my main stomach. Since, my surgery took so long and a great deal of trauma was done to my stomach, my doctor was concerned that I might experience bloating, nausea and terrible pressure in that stomach. An over stimulated stomach will produce extra stomach acid that irritates the stitching in the lining. The tube has a plug that I can release the excessive stomach acid into the sink to relief those symptoms. Fortunately, I have not had to use it and at this point. I doubt I will; I have made it past most of the hurdles.
The morning after the surgery they did an upper GI to ensure there were no leaks in my stomach pouch; passing that test, they put me on full liquids for my stay in the hospital. Now I am able to eat puree foods and hopefully in a couple of weeks, I will be eating soft foods and grounded meats.
The night after the surgery, I was depressed and I was thinking to myself what the hell did I do to myself. I was in a lot of pain and drinking sips of water was difficult. Having the nissen done, I thought I was prepared for what to expect, but I was kidding myself. However, I did not let it get to me. I got up and walked ever couple of hours and each time, I walked a little further. You cannot imagine how much better you begin to feel by simply walking. Also, they had this breathing device that measures your intake. I did that religiously: each time trying to out due the hour before.
By the time I got home, I felt better and I felt hopeful about my health. Now it is a waiting game to see if my sleep apnea improves as I lose the weight. I am past ready to return to my work. Playing World of Warcraft to pass the time is neither living nor does it pays the bills.

Re: I made it through the surgery
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 6:38 AMHoly smoke, Lee, I didn't realize you were in for such a wallop, but am glad that you are recovering so well and sound like you are in goodo spirits - especially given all you've been through!
It 's very nice that your friends and family are so attentive, but I do get how exhausting that can be - you feel like you have to be "up" for them and you truly appreciate their love and concern, but sheesh - give a guy a break. I remember having inpatient surgery at 14, and, even then, I was exhausted by the many visitors I had - and I was only in for two nights. That was back in the day, though - these days, the insurance companies wouldn't have paid for it, but I digress.
Glad you are back where you need to be, and happy that your journey is that much further along. Please keep us in the loop, eh? We DO care!!!!

Re: I made it through the surgery
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 9:15 PMLee - I felt very similar after my surgery. As soon as I got my wits about me in ICU, I was wondering what the hell I had just done to myself. When they moved me out from ICU to a normal post surgery floor, and they made me take a small walk before settling down (to boost my confidence to actually get out of bed in the future) I actually started breaking down knowing the worst was slowly lagging behind me.
And the stress of what I needed to catch up with after - Yikes!!! Its still there - and things have compounded in some ways. But really, while the world you left for awhile waits and becomes impatient, this is an extraordinary circumstance and you deserve the luxury of playing WOW as I did playing on my Nintendo DS, watching obscence amounts of Discovery network, et al. And, if the world does not forgive you, we surely do. Times like these make a barter community seem more fair and accommodating.
Enjoy your recovery! The big picture is still good.
