I own three very big Akitas: Logan, Lilly and Luther. Lilly is on my photo. She goes everywhere with me. She is almost 100lbs, Logan is the oldest and he about is about 165 lbs, and Luther is the youngest and weights in at about 170 lbs.
When we got Luther, he would sleep on his back. It really is the cutest thing. My wife and kids just ate it up. Anyway, now that he is full grown, he still sleeps that way, but he snores like a freight train and on occasion he chokes and wakes himself up. My dog has sleep apnea.

Re: Not so funny story, but sort of is.
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 10:09 AMOMG, Lee!!! My dog does, too!
We have three dogs also: Zeke, 160 lbs. Dane/Mastiff mix, Pepper, 125 lbs. Lab/Pit Bull mix (the one with OSA) and our newest, Maddie, a purebred (but we got her from a rescue as with all our dogs) Great Dane who is 11 months old - we've had her a month today. Anyhow, our dogs LOVE to lie on their backs to the point that we call our house the "House of Upside Down Dog."
Let me tell you, when Zeke, Pepper and my husband get going snoring, forget trying to watch TV. Not gonna happen. -

Re: Not so funny story, but sort of is.
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 7:26 PMYea, our Logan snores too, but I have never heard him choke. He was a rescue dog as well. One of the guys I worked with: his daughter got him from a breeder and Logan got way too big for her and she was going to take him to a shelter. Luther and Lilly, we got from a breeder. We love Akitas. They are very loyal and loving dogs. And, too smart for their own good. lol
However, Lurther has the heart that can heal a soul. I have never had pet that had such a gentle and old spirit that he has. Just looking at him put smiles on peoples faces. It makes me a little sad that he has sleep apnea. Despite it, he is always happy.
