Moist Hoses?

I know...The topic sounds kinda exciting huh? Calm down folks..it isn't all that exciting. Yanno I bought some of those fleece covers for my CPAP hoses to insulate them so I wouldn't get so much Rain-Out. But, Yanno those hoses don't dry out completely between uses. I have two that I hang over my bedroom door and swap them out so they have a chance to dry out. I pulled the insulation off of one last night after a droplet worked it's way out and noticed they were both still wet inside....even the one that had been used the night before last.

I admit that I don't wash my hoses every single morning.. When I do they don't dry out by next use either.

It can't be good to have hoses that never dry out completely. What do you all do to dry your hoses thoroughly between uses..this is for the folks with humidifiers..of course.

I have a second CPAP that a friend gave to me so now I am starting to hook up my hoses to that to blow dry them between uses. I don't want any fungus or mold growing in there.

Thanks
Pam

Just my own personal input here:

Until about a month ago, I didn't use a humidifier at all despite the often very dry conditions here in SoCal. But i started to get too much throat irritation and related issues so I finally started to use a passive, passover humidifier. I don't experience rain-out at all, really. But then, its not much of a humidifier.

Also, I don't rinse my hose out at all. Yikes! I wash my mask often but since all I get through the hose is air from my BiPap, I generally leave it alone.

However, one thing I do have is a hose that has ridges on the outside but is smooth on the inside. For over two years, I used the cheapie, translucent blue ribbed hose that the insurance company left with me - the kind that whistles when you whip it in circles. Not sure if you use that sort of hose but I am thinking that might be more prone to trap water in the ridges and not dry out so well. If you do have that kind of hose, I highly recommend buying the higher grade hoses that are actually spiral ringed hoses that are smoother on the inside - they are more flexible and maybe they might dry out easier because they are less prone to trap water. They aren't completely smooth on the inside but have less "depth" on the ridges than the ones that are molded to have ridges.

If you already have the spiral bound hoses that are smoother on the interior, maybe hanging them vertically and near a source of warmer, rising air might help - I only say this because I wouldn't want your other CPap to prematurely reach that unknown number of hours on the fan before it craps out. Also, I would be careful about hanging the hoses or keeping them in directly sunlight - not sure what UV will do to them.

Sorry i can't be of more help - it seems the Bay Area and any area near the ocean might have a significantly higher amount of relative humidity on a daily basis. I am 30 miles inland and the most I feel of the ocean on a typical day is the marine layer that creeps in until about noon during June gloom. Although, I do recall during one freakish, rogue spell of pretty bad humidity a year or two back (in dead of summer when the moonson-ish type stuff from south of the border spun into SoCal for awhile). I think I did have "rain-out" because at the time, I thought I had tipped the humidifier over and water had spilled into my hose.

    Good luck!

      Hi MC!

Thanks for the good advice. I didn't realize there were better hoses out there. I will look for them for sure when I get back in town. I think that just may help a lot.
I also realized that I think I may have my humidifier set too high. Maybe if I lower the setting a little it wouldn't heat the water quite as much and I would have less moiture in the hose.
I do hang the hoses over my bedroom door already away from sunlight but so that they can dry..unless I really want them to dry in which case I use my spare CPAP. Maybe with the lower setting on the humidifier and the new hose I won't need to dry them out that way anymore.

      Thanks for the help.

    I had an idea..while thinking about this...issue

how about using a hair dryer to dry out our hoses..periodically..

    that should work

I do not rinse it often..every few weeks... suppose I should get better

but when I do..I put really hot water thru the hose..

Be careful with the hair dryer. At least on my hose, the connection on the hose that fits on the nozzle to my humidifier is a soft rubber. Heat it up too much with the hair dryer and you might melt it or distend it so it no longer has a snug fit. I'm married to an engineer. I think some of these ideas I've gleaned by osmosis.

andddddddddddd...I think you do not have to have the hair dryer on highhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Leah!

you can adjust it to warm..so that it blows warm air..

          no melting those.. hoist moses!

No hot air?????? You know I'm so full of it, LOL! Yeah, I didn't think of the "warm" setting. Let's face it, with me you all know it's "all or nothing"! Caffeine, need more COFFEE!!!!!

Or, maybe I've already had too much...

ya know what is funny Leah..

one time...water got in my computer keyboard..and I got the bright idea of using the hairdryer..and didn't think about how hot it could get

and I melted a few keys.. and man they went quick..

              gonzo..before I knew it!

              hehehe

As you have stated, you probably need to cut back the setting on the humidifier.

If you are worried about mould, then clean them I use half a cap max of bleach in a bucket of water about once a week, sort of {:-).

When I clean my hose, I give it a rinse with mouthwash on the theory that it will kill any microbes that are fixing to take up residence there. In the morning, I stop the humidifier (which I only use in dry season here) and let the thing blow for a good spell to help dry it out.

Thanks everyone for all of the good advice. I have turned down my humidifier and so far that seems to have taken care of the problem.
MC I didn't find those nicer hoses online unless they are the ones they call the white hoses. Could you possible send me a link when you get a chance?

BTW, they say apnea releases hormones that make you gain weight. Since I am dieting I have been very very good about wearing my CPAP every night. I figure I might as well take every advantage I can.. so far I am down 23 pounds in 7 weeks...woohoo

      Thanks everyone

          NK - bite me, Pam!

Just kidding. Good for you!!! Between everything I have going on with me health-wise, I'll never be quite right, weight-wise. I take at least 3 medications that make it very easy to gain weight. CRAP.

Now it's time to try and take it back off.. I am trying!
