Crapped Out!!!

topic posted Sun, April 13, 2008 - 7:31 PM by
Hey all,

Night before last, I was going to bed and my BiPAP was DEAD! No light, nothing. It wouldn't turn on, and I have gone the past two days without my constant companion. It's been a little scary. I will call my doc first thing in the morning b/c I do not have the first clue about what to do - do I get it fixed? Where? I don't use the same DME anymore. Do I get a new one? My doc said once that if you get a new machine you have to do another sleep study and I would SO rather not. The last one was about 3 years ago and I just now have gotten all the glue out of my hair from it (jk). I looked and there is no reset button.

Anybody have this happen? Any suggestions?

    Darla...
Not sure about your neck of the woods but...
Locally (Los Angeles) I found a repair service that serviced my particular machine - when I took it there all they required was a Rx from my doctor to give me loaner and then they sent/received my machine and I picked it up a few days later. Cost me about $250.00. I got the listing from the website of the company that makes my machine.

Maybe you can look up your machine online and see if the site lists authorized repair agents?

    Wow - good luck.

Darla has now experienced a huge fear of mine; that of my machine crapping out on me! I'm going to look up my machine and see what I have to do "just in case". I'll have my machine for 2 years in June and I've logged over 3700 hours on it; and that's just a guess. I'd have to look to make sure.

Thanks MC! Darla -- good luck Sweetie!!!!

        Thanks, guys.

I have to tell you, I was pretty freaked out - I was SO not wanting those horrible suffocating dreams - usually for me the ones where I couldn't scream (and needed to). Those are yukky.

I also haven't had any problems (that I notice) about not having the BiPAP. I have enjoyed sleeping without all that crap on my face. I'm thinking that I'm gonna do as MC suggested and get a place that might be able to fix the poor ol' dear. They are always selling them on Craigslist, but, uh, no.

        You guys rock.

Wow, umm...Darla, not to pry, but who is your medical insurance company. They usually have a 3rd party group to manage maintenance on the machines. I have had two machines stop working (and of them was when I was out of State); they sent a temp machine to me within 24 hrs and a new machine within 7-10 day. A licensed respiratory therapist came to my house with the new machine to set it up, asked if I had any questions and went over the new machine. Sleep Central was the original company Cigna used and now they use Apria to manage their machines.

You should not a new sleep study to get receive a new machine. A respiratory therapist can adjust the settings on the new machine to your doctor’s orders.

          I hope this helps,

            Lee,

You aren't prying. I had the machine through my old job (and purchased it through them) who had a self-insurance thing going on. The benes were FAB and I wish I still had them, though now I have Health Net HMO. Most of the DMEs, I have found, won't touch an HMO (too many hoops, I suppose). So that' my quandry. I also HATED the old DME and was severely under and over served by them. Even though Apria is crappy, I like them better than the old guys.

Yea, I prefer Sleep Central over Apria. They were great. Apria is slow to get things done. It took them over 3 weeks to change the settings on my bipap.

However, the last time Apria came out, the respiratory therapist explained my benefits. I saw shocked to find out how often I was allowed to replace the equipments: stupid things like the hose or water container for the humidifier. I got two masks within a 2 month period and didn’t pay a dime. If you still have Apria, you should called them find out what your benfits are.

I from Orlando, FL and my wife and I were visiting her sisters in Atlanta, GA. My bipap, died the night we got there. I called Sleep Central that evening and they sent me a temporary one the very next day; so, I was only missed one night. I could not believe how quickly the responded. When I got back to Orlando, the respiratory therapist came out to my home within a week with a new machine. He was supposed to pick-up the temporary one, but he forgot to take it. I called them back to let them know and they said they would send someone out, but they never did. Now, I use it when I travel. Everything is backed up and ready to go. I don’t have to worry about leaving anything behind anymore.

They did the same thing when I switch from a cpap to a bipap. So, I have a spare cpap. If you can’t get yours fixed or replaced, I would be happy to give it to you. The only thing is that when I moved, the power cord was missed placed. I would need to find it, unless you have the same cpap. The setting on it will also need to be changed, I believe it is still set at 19; the reason I was switched to a bipap. The unit is made by Respironics and it is Remstar plus. It is about 3 years old and was only used for maybe 3 mouths.

Well, I am (almost) a happy girl! I get to pick up my new unit (and crap) tonight. Since I am a veteran at this, I don't have to go through the training session. Woo hoo (and I really mean that)!!! I can pick it up today after work.

Well, everything was NOT perfect - so I didn't use the machine. I got it home and they failed to give me a SMART card. So I didn't use it until I could call the place to find out if that was even ok. As a matter of fact, thank you for reminding me. I am so damned tired right now I can hardly think straight. One plus is that I am learning Spanish and now can say that I am very tired in Spanish.

hey..may I ask about the smart card

                      why do you need that..

I know I have a card in my machine..and a few times they asked me to send it in to them

but not for a year at least now..

                      what is its purpose..

thought it just told them..about our usage?

hey and learning spanish..good for you woman

I was always so horrid at learning languages..I have a horrible memory..for wrote..

cannot..and never could memorize a damn thing...

even had a hard time..tyring to learn..tai chi... too much memory for me..

guess it would just take me a lot longer than anyone...else..so..I lose my momentum

                      you go girl!

    Congrats Darla!!

I decided on a premptive strike! I went to my doctor and asked for a script for filters and he gave me a script for new filters, mask and hose. Since I'm very pleased with my mask style (Ultra Mirage II) and I'm not a new CPAP user (over 3700 hours logged on my machine in the last 23 months) I don't need to bother the DME company with a home visit. They're going to pop my goods in the mail and I'll have them on Thursday.

I did ask my doctor what I needed to do if my machine actually stopped working. He told me to just call their office first thing and they'd make arrangements for me.

    Whew! Glad that's done.

Hope you can now get a great night's sleep, Darla!

    Here's some zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's for ya!

    Love,
    Leah

I saw there's a CPAP BiPAP auction online that sells brand new machines with an Rx from your doc...maybe you want to go that way..get the same machine...oh but the insurance may not pay for it..hmmm

        Thanks, all.

I slept with it last night (I wasn't sure exactly WHAT role the card played and whether there was programming on it for the correct pressures, so I didn't want to risk it until I spoke with Apria). It wasn't perfect and I'm using a smaller mask which is different for me - I have been using a large full face mask, but the bottom part came to under my chin, and I thought that might be excessively large! This new one is okay, but puts a lot of pressure on my sinuses which are a little aggravated right now.

I went to bed to take a nap at 5 PM (I was excited to sleep with the machine!) and woke up at 1 AM to eat dinner! Back to bed and got up this morning more or less on time. I am feeling more energetic for sure, and am happy for that. I also thank God that I am so easily able to tolerate the mask. I know what a trial it is for many folks, and do not take it for granted, let me tell you. Oh, and this new machine is MUCH noisier than the old one. I am feeling quite like Darth Vader.
